global solution for post-disaster temporary relief housing

about this project...

  • For this service learning project, my partner and I were required to design a home with a sleeping area for four, food preparation area, and bathroom in under 400 square feet. We accomplished sleeping for six in 290 square feet.
  • Large amounts of research had to be conducted in order to incorporate the culture of Indonesia into the final design solution.
  • Innovative design solutions had to be brainstormed in order to make the units easily shipped to the location and relocated when they are no longer needed in this area.
  • My personal contributions to this design solution included research on culture and building systems, creation of presentation renderings, and the construction drawings. I also assisted my partner with presentation material such as a folio, concept boards, and material samples.

about this project...

  • The clients for this project were Darrin and April, the parents of Levi, a child who was diagnosed with autism and 90% hearing loss.
  • Design solution must provide a bathroom, learning area, play area, and sleep area all in one bedroom suite.
  • As an evidence based design project, my research focused on incorporating the psychology of color as well as the effects of organization and change on a child with autism.
  • Promotion of life long learning was one of the major goals I had for this project, and I achieved this by linking my research topics to color theory and organization.
